CSAC Releases Numbers for 12 Months of Substance Abuse Monitoring

The California State Athletic Commission (CSAC) today released its data on the number of combat sports athletes (boxing, MMA, and kickboxing) who have tested positive for banned substances in competition from 03/31/07 through 03/30/08. Substances that are prohibited in combat sports athletes in regulated events in California are recreational drugs (also referred to as “drugs of abuse”) and performance enhancing drugs (also referred to as “steroids”).
- Of the 65 violations for drugs of abuse or performance enhancing drugs in combat sports athletes, 53 were found in MMA fighters. That’s 82%.
- Thirty-six of the 41 violations for drugs of abuse were marijuana infractions (88%). The next most commonly-found drug was cocaine, which was found in just three samples.
- Steroids were found in 20 cases. In seven of those, more than one steroid was found in the athlete’s sample.
The CSAC has been the most active in carrying out its mandate to eliminate drugs of abuse and recreational drugs from combatants in California.
