UFC 83 Prediction Contest

Posted April 9, 2008 by admin

UFC 83: St. Pierre vs Serra 2 is on the way! On April 19th Montreal hosts the second encounter of Matt Serra and George St. Pierre.

No doubt in a move to get the Canadian fans excited about the event, the UFC has included eight Canadian MMA fighters on the card. This will be the UFC’s first event in Canada and all tickets for the Centre Bell sold out very quickly.

Whoever predicts the most winners of the card’s eleven fights will win a copy of Matt Hughes‘ book Made in America: The Most Dominant Champion in UFC History!

I announce the contest in the 1m17s YouTube video above but you can also check it out in higher definition at this m4v file. Good luck!

Win a Copy of Liddell’s New Book by Predicting UFC 82

Posted February 26, 2008 by admin

Lots of MMA fighters these days are writing books about their lives. Matt Hughes has recently gone on tour to promote his book, Jens Pulver has a couple out, and both Tito Ortiz and Randy Couture are supposed to have books on the way soon. Chuck Liddell’s new book Iceman: My Fighting Life has been selling like crazy and at the time of this writing holds the number 16 spot on the New York Times bestseller list. Among casual readers it has been a success as well, earning 4.5 out of five stars among the user reviews on Amazon.com.

Would you like a copy of Liddell’s new book mailed to you? Well friend, I think we can help with that. We’re going to have a contest!

Here’s how it works:

  1. Cut a hole in the box. Make your predictions for UFC 82 this Saturday. What’s that you say? You’re not a user here on the site yet? No prob, it’s easy to register.
  2. If you pick the most fights correctly on the UFC 82 card, you win! If there is a tie between more than one user here on MMAPredictions.com, one person among those with the highest number of correct predictions will be randomly selected as the winner.

The cohost on MMAPredictions Radio and I have an internal bet between each other regarding the outcome of the Dustin Hazelett versus Josh Koscheck fight. The bet is simple: if Hazelett wins, Luis buys me a t-shirt of my choice from BustedTees.com. If Koscheck wins, I buy him a shirt.

Why am I putting my faith in Dustin Hazelett? I am supporting Hazelett for the simple reason that I used to enjoy watching him fight at the old Relson Gracie Brazilian jiu-jitsu tournaments in Columbus, Ohio. I remember the night that he actually fought Relson’s son Rhalan Gracie in MMA and won a very close decision.

dustin hazelette
Dustin Hazelett submits one of many opponents with his crafty work from the guard in 2004.

Luis is picking Josh Koscheck to win for the even simpler reason that he will always bet against me no matter what the terms. I won’t get into the bets that took place in college among us. Not fit for print even on the internet.

Good luck on your predictions this weekend. In addition to UFC 82, make sure you get your picks in for the IFL - Las Vegas event too!

Cage Rage Predictions Winner Announcement

Posted December 2, 2007 by admin

Congratulations to MMAPredictions user ALPHANUMERIC8!

As we announced last week, the predictor here on MMAPredictions who guessed the most fights right on the Cage Rage 24: Feel the Pain card would win a combat sports DVD courtesy of OnTheMat.com.

There was of course a tie for first place. ALPHANUMERIC8 was one of five users to guess nine of the eleven fights correctly. But recall that in case of a tie, the win would go to the user who had predicted on most fight cards since being here on MMAPredictions.

Another reason to stay active on the site! :)

Breakdown of HCF: Title Wave

Posted October 20, 2007 by admin

MMAPredictions Breakdown

HCF Title Wave

Last night’s HCF: Title Wave is in the books. The fight card, which ranged from having a fighter of high international renown by the name of Aleksander Emelianenko, the brother of #1-ranked heavyweight Fedor Emelianenko, also contained the mixed martial arts debut of four men. This unlikely juxtaposition of talent levels will no doubt be less prevalent as the Canadian MMA talent pool matures.

Emelianenko defeated veteran MMA juggernaut Dan Bobish by a standing guillotine in the first round. Former UFC fighter Sean Salmon TKO’d Marcos Vinicius in the second round, and Thomas Schulte, who recently competed in the Art of War 3: USA vs Brazil, was victorious as well.

Here’s the way things shook down on our site.

  • 165 MMA fans did their best to predict this card’s fight outcomes. Twelve percent of those (twenty folks) came from Canada, the native country of the Hardcore Championship Fighting promotion. That’s exactly the same proportion of our overall predictors active on the site which come from Canada as of this writing.
  • No one predicted the whole event correctly. It would have been a miracle for anyone to have that much insight into today’s card, honestly.
  • The average correct prediction percentage on the card across all MMAPredictions users was 44.3%, which is understandably below our current all-time average of 53.8%.

MMAPredictions users will recall that we had a contest here on the site for the person who best predicted the fight outcomes on the card. Turning to the detailed results of this card, we see that we had a four-way tie among folks who predicted ten of the card’s twelve fights correctly, registering an 83.3% prediction accuracy. In case of a tie like this, the winner would be determined by the number of events predicted here on the site.

And our winner is… SRamirez, who has predicted on 17 events on MMAPredictions! SRamirez wins a copy of the World Grappling Games 4th American International Championships, courtesy of OnTheMat.com. Among other competitors, this DVD contains submission grappling footage of MMA fighters Alberto Crane, Nam Phan, Joe Camacho, and Ralek Gracie.

4th American International

That wraps up the news for this Hardcore Championship Fighting event. There are just a few hours left before tonight’s UFC 77: Hostile Territory, so get your predictions in if you haven’t yet!

Predictions Contest for Friday’s HCF Card

Posted October 15, 2007 by admin

HCF Title wave

As you’ve noticed this weekend we have two fight cards, UFC 77: Hostile Territory and Hardcore Championship Fighting: Title Wave from Canada. We wanted to give away another combat sports DVD to you all out there for predicting well, and we’ve learned from experience that a fight card with tons of fights is harder to predict than one with, say, five. Hey, who knew EliteXC: Uprising was going to be such a predictable fight card? Okay okay, maybe I should’ve! ;)

So the HCF event on Friday is a perfect fight card to allow all of you out there to show what you know. The person who predicts the most fights correct on Friday’s HCF: Title Wave card will win a combat sports DVD courtesy of OnTheMat.com! In case of a tie, the person who has predicted the most fight cards to date will be declared the winner.

Polish your crystal balls and get predicting!

K-1 Hero’s Breakdown, EliteXC: Uprising Contest Winners

Posted September 17, 2007 by admin

MMAPredictions BreakdownK-1 Hero’s Olympia fight card:

  • 183 people predicted on the card
  • No one got the entire card correct when predicting winners!
  • The average correct prediction percentage on the card across all MMAPredictions users was 41.4%, which is a decent bit under our current all-time average of 55.8%.

For the nut-and-bolts view of the predictions for this card, here are the detailed results.

Okay, I’ve finally got the answers about who won our contest for predictions on EliteXC: Uprising! Sorry it took so long. Our winners are…

  • treywhit: accuracy of 100.0, 6 events completed, overall accuracy 87.037
  • ironman: accuracy of 100.0, 6 events completed, overall accuracy 81.5741
  • El_Capitan: accuracy of 100.0, 6 events completed, overall accuracy 80.0

I have emailed you three and will be getting your MMAPredictions t-shirt and DVD courtesy of OnTheMat.com in the mail to you soon! For a complete view of the 76 people who guessed 100% on ElitexC: Uprising, click here. What I’ve learned is that whenever there’s a fight card with only five fights on it, don’t make a contest out of it. :)

IFL World ChampionshipsOne last thing: Ricco Rodriguez replaces Tom Sauer as Ben Rothwell’s opponent for this week’s IFL World Championships. If you weren’t aware, we’ve created a forum thread specifically to keep folks up with updates to fight cards. Sometimes they might not be front-page quality news, so you might not find them right here on the site’s homepage. The best way to keep up to date on such changes (especially last minute ones that could affect your predictions!) would be to subscribe to that thread’s RSS feed. If you’re in the dark about what an RSS feed is, check out this 3 minute video to learn all about them!

Site Contest Announced for Saturday’s EliteXC: Uprising

Posted September 13, 2007 by admin

elitexc uprising

This Saturday Hawaii’s Blaisdell Arena plays host to EliteXC: Uprising, slated as “the biggest MMA event in Hawaiian history”. That may not mean much to folks outside Hawaii, but those familiar with the island’s passion for the sport understand that it’s a bold statement.

One name folks here on MMAPredictions will likely recognize include Nick Diaz, who will be coming off his suspension from fighting imposed by the Nevada State Athletic Commission after Diaz tested positive for marijuana use in his most recent fight against Takanori Gomi. Diaz’ younger brother and winner of The Ultimate Fighter Season 5, Nate Diaz commented, “I think Mike Aina’s got an ass-whooping to look forward to,” in a half-hour SHOWTIME preview show being run this week.

To reward the best predictors for this card, we’re going to do the following: the three people who best predict the fights on the card will receive an MMAPredictions t-shirt and a DVD courtesy of OnTheMat.com! If there’s a tie - say for example, five people all get 100% on the card - those with the best overall prediction accuracy will win the prizes.

MMAPredictions Contest for this Weekend

Posted July 2, 2007 by admin

We’ll keep this short and sweet! Whichever MMAPredictions user gets the highest percentage correct on this weekend’s UFC 73: Stacked will get a DVD courtesy of OnTheMat.com!

Yes, we know there’s a decent chance there could be a tie, so here are the tiebreakers.

  • If two or more MMAPredictions users tie with the highest number of correct picks, the winner will be determined by whoever has predicted the most cards (as shown on their user profile)
  • If there’s still a tie, whichever user registered on the site first gets the DVD!
  • If there’s still a tie, then well we’ll just have to think of something.

There are a few people who are not eligible for this one, and it probably doesn’t need to be said, but MMAPredictions staff like Luis and I aren’t eligible. Gumby’s not getting the DVD, because well, he gave us the DVD to give to you!

Get your UFC 73 picks in, and keep an eye out for last minute changes to the fight card that could affect your choices. Good luck!

- Caleb
