MMAPredictions Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

How does this darn thing work?
MMA Predictions lets you track how well you can predict the outcomes of UFC, ProElite, and IFL fights (among others). There are other ways to do so but none of those are very simple.
- Here, you just go to an event page, click the photo of the mixed martial artist you think will win. It will go from a black-and-white photo to color, indicating your choice.
- You have until one hour before the start of the event to make your selections.
- If you change your mind about a prediction, you can always edit your picks just by clicking again on whatever fighter’s photo you want to win. You’ll notice there’s never a “Save” or “Submit” button. The system just remembers your pick as being whoever you clicked on last.
Do I have to predict all the fights on a card?
If you want your picks to count, yes. Why? Because we don’t want people gaming the system by coming in, picking a couple easy fights and getting them all right, and then receiving 100% for the card. That’s cheating. We’re not going to say exactly what percent of the card you have to predict for it to count, because then some folks will only predict that amount of the card to qualify for prizes. Just predict all fights on the card.
When is the best time to make my predictions?
While there’s no bad time to come to the site and predict, we definitely recommend stopping by MMAPredictions the day before the fights go down to enter your final predictions. By that time the cards are more or less set and aren’t likely to change.
What if the fight isn’t a win or a loss?
Only wins and losses are recorded at MMAPredictions.com. Matches ending in a draw, technical decision, technical draw, disqualification, forfeit, no contest, or any other sort of shenanigan are not counted towards your percentage accuracy. Also, if a fight result is changed after the event itself by an athletic commission for something like banned substance use, the original victor will be counted as such on this site.
How do I get ranked?
You have to have predicted on four events to before you can be ranked. If you’re within the top 20 best predictors at that point, you’ll also be listed on our Top Predictors page! Make sure you stay active though. If you let two months pass without predicting an event, your name will be pulled from that list.
Can I win prizes for predicting well?
We occasionally give out prizes to folks who predict very well on certain events. For example, for UFC 82 we presented one of the folks who correctly predicted 100% of the fights a copy of Chuck Liddell’s new book Iceman: My Fighting Life. Prior to that, a few times in 2007 we gave out some DVDs to folks who predicted certain events very well. We always announce upcoming contests in news articles on the main page of the site. We’ll sometimes also get the word out via our MMAPredictions MySpace and / or email blast too. All contest-related articles on the site can be found here if you are interested.
What’s with the colored usernames?
Good predictors receive stronger colors of red in their username. That way you know just by looking at the person’s username how good of a predictor they are. The five categories of predictors are:
- 0-50% Peon
- 51-75% Peer of the Realm
- 76-88% Prince/Princess of Prediction-dom
- 89-96% King/Queen of the Prediction World
- 97-100% Emperor/Empress of the Prediction Universe
What’s this talk about receiving fight results on my cell phone?
Ever heard of the “Free Hugs” Campaign? Since we can’t give you a hug very easily from where we are, this is our way of making your day more special.
- All members of MMA Predictions who opt-in to this service will receive text messages after the mixed martial arts events that are listed here take place with fight results. We have 160 characters to work with at best in SMS, and we’ll fit as much info as possible in there.
- While this is something we do for you for free, your cell phone provider may charge you some small amount to receive the messages.
- You can always opt out of this feature by toggling it on/off in your user profile.
- Be aware that depending where you live, receiving the results on your cell may expose you to knowing the results before the fights are shown in your area.
What’s that red area that appears behind my prediction accuracy?
First the non-geeky answer: it represents how reliable your accuracy is. If that red band is really wide, it means you tend to not be very consistent in how well you predict. If it’s really narrow, you tend to predict about the same every time. For the loud-and-proud math nerds out there, the arrow is standard deviation.
Are you going to give my cell number / home address / email addy to bad people?
We’re not giving your information to anyone, no matter what. Even if our mothers came on their knees begging us for it, we’d tell them to go climb a rope. In more formal terms, we’ll never sell, rent, or share your contact information with anyone, period.
Can I advertise with you?
Sure! We have many ways of reaching just the audience you’re looking for, from:
- on-site banner advertising
- to our weekly audio show
- to sponsorship of prize packages for our best predictors
- and much more! We’re very creative!
Send us a note through our Contact Us page and we’ll be in touch with you shortly.
